THE LOST PORTFOLIO OF SHIRLEY TRUMP

Exhibit of Drawing and Paintings

West Michigan Bank & Trust is pleased to exhibit a collection of work by the late Shirley Trump, local artist and art teacher, which has never been seen before. The exhibit will be on display beginning May 5th through August 6, 2014. The community is invited to come in and hear more of the story from her daughter, Susan Maunders Olson, and son-in-law, Nicholas Olson.

This exhibit shows some of the 47 works held within a 32” by 16” by 3” black leather portfolio that Jeryl Colby of Colby’s Orchard House, gave Susan last spring when she and Nick returned to Frankfort. Jeryl saved the portfolio because she loved Shirley, yet she never opened it. She waited until she could give the portfolio to Susan in person. They opened it together and were delighted by what they found. Susan decided to share the heartbreakingly beautiful work discovered in an exhibit called “The Lost Portfolio of Shirley Trump.”

The work in the lost portfolio is of two styles, abstract color studies and detailed nature drawings, all on paper or art board and done in pencil, acrylic, or gouache. Susan states, “I my think mother was experimenting with two very different approaches. There is one piece that combines both, but most are one or the other. I think she was always challenged to create a synthesis between abstract art and nature. People who are familiar with her work may recognize both from her known work.” When Shirley Trump passed away in 2008, she left behind over 600 works of art created oil, acrylic, and watercolor paintings, sculptures of wood or clay, woodblock prints, and many drawings in colored pencil, pastel, or ink.

Shirley Trump was raised in Franklin, Michigan, and graduated in the 1940s from Michigan State College (now Michigan State University). She was a student of John D. Martelli and majored in art. She became a sculptural assistant to Marshall Fredericks and worked for years in his studio on Woodward Avenue, now a National Historic Landmark. Shirley also studied and taught at the Cranbrook School of Art. In Frankfort, Shirley Trump is best remembered as an art teacher and a force behind the Crystal Lake Art Center’s Open Studios, later to become the Elizabeth Lane Oliver Center for the Arts.”

West Michigan Bank & Trust invites you to view “The Lost Portfolio of Shirley Trump” exhibit during normal banking hours. The exhibit is free of charge and located at 501 Main Street, Frankfort, MI. For more information, please call (231) 352-9655.
